Army MOS 15W UAV Operator – Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

The 15W Unmanned Aircraft Systems Operators (UAV) are key to providing Army Leaders with critical intelligence during combat operations. The 15W UAV Operators are remote pilots of unmanned observation aircraft, who collect and analyze information for Military Intelligence teams.

The UAV operator supervises or operates the UAV, such as the Army’s Shadow Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, to include mission planning, mission sensor/payload operations, launching, remotely piloting, and recovering the aerial vehicle.

Job Duties of 15W UAV Operators

  • Conduct air reconnaissance, surveillance, targeting and acquisition missions
  • Plan and analyze flight missions
  • Perform preflight, in-flight and postflight checks and procedures
  • Launch and recover airframe from runway
  • Perform maintenance on communications equipment, power sources, light/heavy wheeled vehicles and crane operations
  • Directs and emplaces ground control stations

15W Qualifications

In order to enlist as a 15W, applicants need to meet the following qualifications:

  • ASVAB Score: 105 in the aptitude area SC
  • Security Clearance: Secret
  • Vision: Normal color vision required
  • Physical Demands Rating: Medium
  • PULHES Profile: 222221
  • Additional Notes: Must be US Citizen, never been served as a member of the U.S. Peace Corps, no record of conviction by court-martial, and no record of conviction by a civil court for any offense other than minor traffic violations.

15W Training

Job training for an unmanned aircraft systems operator requires 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and over 23 weeks of Advanced Individual Training with on-the-job instruction. Part of this time is spent in the classroom and in the field.

Some of the skills you’ll learn are:

  • Performing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance simulation missions
  • Preparing maps, charts and intelligence reports
  • Analyzing aerial photographs
  • Using computer systems
